Expansion at Mt Ruapehu hotel

Major extensions to the Ruapehu Skotel at Whakapapa Village are well under way and should be fully complete by 15 March. The extensions will add 27 self-contained rooms and a large self-service restaurant and bar to the hotel. Manager Neil Aldrich said that the handover date for stage one, the restaurant and bar, was 15 February and for stages two and three, the accommodation, 15 March. He said that all rooms had drying facilities for clothing and ski gear in the bathrooms, and one room was fully equipped for disabled persons. The restaurant is a large natural wood structure with a mezzanine TV lounge and adjoining bar facilities. The restaurant will be selfservice to help keep prices down. Mr Aldrich said management rights were taken over by Lion Breweries Ltd from 1 January this year because the Skotel company wanted the expertise and management skills that Lion could provide now that the hotel was offering wider services.
