Waimarino ladies at Papakura

The Waimarino was the smallest association represented of the 24 teams which competed in the Rothmans National Ladies' tournament held in Papakura recently. The team went to Auckland, accompanied by their coach Les Clarke, coacher Willie Williams and manager Lou Williams on 24 December. They played 1 1 games in the five days beginning Sunday 29 December. The Waimarino team won their first game, against Horowhenua 8-6, and lost their next game 7-0 to Counties. The following day Waimarino lost 12-4 to Waikato and 13-3 to North Shore. Mid Canterbury beat them on Tuesday 8-1 , but Waimarino came back with a 9-5 win over Thames Valley. On the same day they lost 1 5-2 to Bay of Plenty. On Wednesday Bay of Islands beat Waimarino 103 and Taranaki beat them 12-4. The two wins put Waimarino into the semi-finals where they lost both games by narrow margins — 6-5' against Bay of Plenty and 10-9 against Thames Valley. Statistically Maxine Pue was the most consistent player in the team. She batted every ball and got the most runs home. Marlene Williams was not far behind Maxine, also playing well.
