Cannons roar on the river
An unusual attraction is being offered to W anganui River visitors over the holiday season. John and Margaret-Anne Barnett at their newlyopened Waireka Estate will be firing one of the three cannons which grace the front lawn of their historic riverside homestead, every day at 1 1am and 2pm. Visitors at the demonstrations participate in the loading, ramming and firing of the cannon, and the projectiles are lemons which land with a splash in the Wanganui River. Other attractions at the Estate include guided tours of one of the best private museums in the country, Devonshire teas, river and jetboat rides and donkey rides. The Waireka Estate is open every day and is one mile past Holly Lodge winery in upper Aramoho.
