Fly strike warning
Fly strike in lambs over the past few weeks has been a major problem especially in the warmer areas of the county such as Makakahi, Ruatiti and Pipiriki areas. It appears that lamb losses could be high. In the past it has not been uncommon to lose 1 5-20 per cent of lambs between docking and sale as a result of fly strike. Two measures of control are available: •crutch all lambs and 'jet' lambs with chemical to prevent fly strike; •shear lambs, wean, drench and dip. Recommended drenching programme requires the first three drenches at threeweekly intervals. It is important to go no ' longer than three weeks, as in warm moist conditions the worm cycle can get as low a§j20 days. Subsequent drenches can be done at four or five weekly intervals. It is important to drench regularly to prevent the build up of dags and reduce the incidence of fly strike.
