Youth hostels on the move

"The Ohakune Youth Hostel has a personality of its own," said the retiring national chief executive of the Youth Hostels Association, Ray Keall, while visiting the Ohakune hostel recently with new national chief, Peter Abrams. They were staying in Ohakune for a night while on a tour of some New Zealand hostels and were impressed with the local hostel, believing it has a lot of potential for summer use. "We are interested in getting year-round usage with the bush walks and other activities for summer — it

should be promoted more," said Mr Abrams. He said the Ohakune hostel was a happy place with a warm and friendly atmosphere created by manageress Fiona Mills. Fiona will be painting the hostel this summer and would appreciate donations of paint, brushes and other painting equipment. Already two local businesses, Dalgety Crown and MSD Speirs have generously donated paint. Mr Abrams said communities and local authorities are more supportive of youth hostels now as they realise their potential for attracting tourists.
