Lieutenant Commander Richard Jackson has been appointed commanding officer of HMNZS Irirangi, the naval communications base at Waiouru. He succeeds Lieutenant Commander Ross Sanson and takes up his appointment next month. Lieutenant Commander Jackson joined the Navy in 1 968 and was one of the first New Zealand naval officers to be trained at the United States Naval Academy. He joined the frigate HMNZS Canterbury • in 1972 before travelling to the United Kingdom the following year to complete an operations course. He subsequently completed a ship's diving course and served in several RNZN ships before becoming executive officer at HMNZS Irirangi in 1978.

He was appointed in command of the patrol craft HMNZS Rotoiti in 1980 and for the last three years has served in Hawaii in an exchange posting on the staff of the Commander US Third Fleet.
