Police File
Early on Wednesday morning, Ohakune police were told by a member of the public that burglars had entered two ski cottages on Raetihi Road. At 5.30am, after the offenders had run off, one person was located and arrested, and appeared in the Wanganui District Court on Thursday 5 December. The second offender was arrested on Thursday and will be appearing in the Ohakune District Court later this month. ★ ★ ★ Ohakune Police arrested a man for the theft of travellers cheques worth $200 from the Ohakune Youth Hostel. The man, who had stayed at the hostel, has since appeared in the Wanganui District arid pleaded guilty. He was remanded to appear in the Wellington District Court at a later date. ★ * ★ The children's playhouse in Jubilee Park, Ohakune, recently completed by Ruapehu Lions, was damaged by vandals over the weekend of 30 November- 1 December. The safety fence was kicked and broken, and vandals tried to force the corrugated iron roof. President of the Lions Club, Michael Crowley, said he was 'hopping mad' at the act of violence. "The house was built voluntarily for the community — what is the point in putting something like this up if this is going to happen?" he said. The Lions will have to repair the house as it is dangerous for children in its present condition. Ohakune Police Sergeant Neil Coker said he would like to hear from anyone who saw or heard anything in the park over that weekend.
