Taihape karate tournament

On Saturday 23 November the Whanake Rangataua Karate Club from National Park attended a Zen Do Kai Karate Tournament in Taihape. Clubs from Wellington, Wanganui, New Plymouth and Waiouru also attended so competition was keen from white belt through to novice and advanced black belt. The entrants from National Park did themselves proud by being successful in the grades they entered into.

Serahn Jacobs (7th kyu) went into the semi-finals but was beaten by fellow team member Peter Murcott (5th kyu) who went into the finals to become eventual runner-up. Kevin Lind (3rd kyu) was successful in Teaching the finals of his grade but was beaten by a points system to gain 2nd place. In his kata section (pattern form) he came 2nd overall, and in his free combat section he came 3rd with a score of 80.5. Dianne Legge (4th kyu) went into her grade finals and came fire. In her kata

section she won again with a score of 86.6. She also won the trophy for best overall green belt. Alex Holes (2nd kyu) went into the finals for his grade and was eventual winner. In the kata section he came lst with a score of 88.6 and in free combat he came 2nd with a score of 85.6. He was also the winner of a trophy for best overall brown belt section. The Whanake Rangataua Karate Club wishes to thank Mr Kevin Murcott for his support and for supplying transport, a,nd to the Ohakune members who attended but could not compete. Kia Kaha! Ohakune Seniors 3rd kyu brown belt 1 black tab: Aroha Mareikura. 4th kyu purple belt 2 white tabs: Brian Oliver. 6th kyu blue belt, Agnes Mareikura, Ivor Hogan, Alec Eaglan.
