Orautoha river trip
BEFORE OUR TRIP Seven pupils from Orautoha Schopl, along with four adults went on a trip on the MV Wakapai from Taumarunui to Pipiriki. To raise money for our trip Standard 3 to Form 2 had a spell-a-thon and a bottle drive. Before our trip we studied and did research on old river boats and historic places we would see on the way.

Day 1 We left Oroutoha School on the bus. When we got to Ohinepa we watched the boat being launched. We had lunch a bit further down the river and went to a private museum. Then we went to Taniwha Rock and we had to put some willow on the rock and if it fell off the taniwha would get mad. When we got to Whakahoro Hut we put our tents up, did our log book, had tea and played games.

and Kelvin Hammond Day 2 In the morning everyone woke up about 6.00am. After breakfast we packed the boat and left about 9.30. Soon we were at an old abandoned farm. On the way back Mr Oliver picked a huge lemon. Later we went to Kirikiroa lookout. There were 236 steps. When we got back from the lookout we had lunch and then we played follow the leader in a big
pool.

Day 3 We left the John Coull Hut at 9.30am. We pulled the boat ashore and tied it up by the bank and then we'walked up a track. We found a hut where a man once lived. The hut was made of pungas and we saw a punga man holding a phone. The next stop was Mangapura Landing, where we had lunch. After lunch we walked in to the Bridge to Nowhere. It took us 40 minutes to get there. We saw some goats but they ran away as we were just about to catch them. When we got to the bridge we had a look around and took some photos.

Day 4 Tieke Hut to Matahiwi Marae We travelled down the river until we came to the drop scene and slowed down. The drop scene is when a hill drops or rises behind another hill. On the way towards the hill it drops. When you move away from the hill it rises. We got to Pipiriki and looked around. First the
colonial house, that was pretty good. Then the school, where we played four square with the other kids. It was pretty boring from Pipiriki to Kawana flonr mill, where we looked around.

Day 5 Matahiwi — Wanganui We left Matahiwi at about 9 o'clock when the day was already quite hot. We got stuck in the mud so we had to push the boat from the shore. When we
jumped on the boat we got our feet wet. At Atene we stopped for a cup of tea. Steven, Kathryn and I made a whitebait net from a plastic bag but the current was too strong for it and it broke. Before we got to Wanganui we stopped at Waireka Estate. There is a private museum there with the skin of a man-eating tiger in it. There was also a cannon. I let the cannon off and it made a terrific noise. We went over to see the donkeys, Simon and Samantha.
