Forestry in business

The reshapmg of government departments which will follow the creation of a Ministry of Environment and a Department of Conservation also includes the transformation of the NZ Forest Service into a commercial corporation. This will have a significant effect on the outlook of the forest service which in future will have to work as a successful business enterprise. A statement issued recently said the new corporation could work anywhere in the chain from forest growing to marketing of finished products, domestically and overseas.

Some possibilities include agroforestry, deer farming, recreation, joint ventures, borrowing and investment.

The change will have considerable implicatioris for the staff and procedures of the NZ Forest Service.
