Field day for local scouts

There was an area field day for Cubs, Scouts and Keas at Waiouru recently. A good turnout by parents enabled us to get all the Cubs and Scouts to the Waiouru community centre at 9.30am. The day was organised by the local district cub leader, Mrs Valerie Saunders, who met us at Waiouru where all participated in a flag break. A number of investitures were carried out to officially warrant several new scout and cub leaders in the district. A soccer game was then organised with our two Ohakune scouts Greg Beisly and Mathew Tailby combining with the Taihape scouts to make up a team to play Waiouru who won by a narrow margin.

The leaders and parents then played the winning team with an older scout leader from Waiouru suffering from a case of bowleggedness, so the ball always seemed to pass through his legs, to the great hilarity of all. On to the cooking competition with the cubs cooking a main meal and dessert over their hobo stoves (tin cans with holes in them), while the scouts had to make something out of ingrediehts which they could either fry or boil. Each patrol had a billy, a fry-pan and a gas stove to cook over. The meal ended up as three fried eggs and mince boiled with potatoes and carrots and mixed herbs. Matthew and Greg were judged on their efforts and they managed a very good second. Swimming sports at the Waiouru baths finished the day, with a variety of events including egg and spoon races for non-swimmers. These were completed as quickly as possible as the boys were getting chilled even though the water was heated to a very comfortable 81°F. Final results at the end of a fun-packed day were: Soccer: Keas — 1st Waiouru Red, 2nd Waiouru Yellow, Cubs — Taihape No. One 1st, 2nd Waiouru, 3rd

Taihape No. Two, 4th Ohakune. Scouts — 1st Waiouru, 2 nd Taihape. Swimming: Scouts — 1st Waiouru, 2nd Taihape, 3rd Ohakune. Keas received the Womble trophy. Cubs — 1st Waiouru, 2nd Taihape. 3rd Ohakune. Cooking: Scouts — 1st Waiouru, 2nd Ohakune, 3rd Taihape No. Two. Cubs — 1st Waiouru Brown, 2nd Ohakune Red, 3rd Taihape Black. Keas — all those participating received certificates. Goalie of the day — Shane Mitchell, Waiouru Cubs; Parent soccer players of the match — Len Gilbert, Taihape, Derrick Beisley, Ohakune.
