New bridge for Whakapapaiti

A new bridge is being built to cross the Whakapapaiti River on the lower section of the track, about a half-hour walk from the Whakapapaiti Hut. The steel bridge is being built in the Tongariro National Park Headquarters at Whakapapa Village and will be flown to its site in sections during the summer. The bridge is designed to give way under pressure of water or lahar so that damage is minimised, and to be put in place again by helicopter. Walkers have had to ford the river since the last bridge was washed away by a lahar in 1975. An Avondale College group got into difficulties earlier this year after fording the river in poor conditions and becoming very wet and cold.
