Big pour at Hapuawhenua

The 'big pour' at the construction site of the new Hapuawhenua Viaduct took place on Tuesday when 170 cubic metres of concrete was poured into the base of the main pier. About 15 workers spent 10 back-breaking hours on the pour while the airpowered vibrators forced the air out of the drying concrete. The pour is the biggest to be made on the viaduct construction, almost 10 times the size of any of the others. The pier is the central support for the bridge, while the others will hold the bridge in place, said the bridge site engineer, Des Bull. Fletcher Construction are the main bridge contractors, sub-contractorsare S.P. and C.P. Ferguson and Hurlstone provide the concrete.
