Teachers stop work

Ruapehu College teachers stopped work last week — in two groups. The stopwork was called by PPTA (Post-Primary Teachers' Association) over concern that the Education Salaries Committee had not dealt appropriately with a claim to restructure salaries which was hoped to keep teachers in the profession, and to attract others. Allan Graham, local PPTA branch spokesman, said it was essential not to disadvantage students and the meetings were timed to help distant schools such as Ruapehu College. Half the Ruapehu staff went to a Wanganui meeting on Tuesday morning, while the other half went to Palmerston North in the afternoon. It was easier to keep the school open because senior students were engaged in exams and some fourth' formers were on outdoor education courses.
