Casino funds for Ringatu hui
Gambling chips worth thousands of dollars changed hands at the casino evening for Tirorangi Marae, Karioi, at the Ohakune Club last week. Gamblers were given a meal, drink tickets and a bag of chips for their cover charge, and could buy more chips from the banker. After cashing in their chips later in the evening, gamblers had a choice of prizes which they could buy with their money. Prizes were purchased for the evening, apart from a donation of car care products from Reynolds Motors, Ohakune. Proceeds from the evening will go towards a large hui of members of the Ringatu Movement, a religious group founded by the Maori leader Te Kooti who died in 1893. It is the first time that the annual hui has been held in this area, but the marae has historic meaning for the movement as it was one of the places where Te Kooti stayed on his travels. Another casino night will be held on Thursday 5 December for the Waimarino Softball Association. Tickets will be available from all softball clubs in the area.
