Siggy battles in Ultrathon

Siggy Bauer of Raetihi was yesterday morning running fourth out of 16 runners in the Double Brown Ultrathon which finishes in Auckland on Friday. Leading was hot favourite, Yiannis Kouros, the Greek ultra-distance champion, despite a penalty of 2 1 minutes for late entry. Second was Richard Tout of Takapuna, and third Dave Hill, also of Takapuna. The 727 km, six-day ultrathon is New Zealand's richest running race with prize money of $ 1 8,000, including $8500 for first and $3500 for second, in the form of training grants approved by the NZAA. Today's 73 km third stage from Taihape to Turangi was the toughest leg, with long, lonely stretches of hilly and barren terrain.
