National tournament of veteran lady golfers in Waimarino
Veteran lady golfers from throughout the country met at the Waimarino golf course last week to complete in the 13th New Zealand Veterans Handicap Foursomes. The players enjoyed the sunshine from Monday to Thursday while competing for four trophies.
The top prize, the New Zealand Ladies Golf Union Salver was won by J. Lovegrove and B. Parker, from Feilding, while the S. S. Wilson Plate went to B. Henderson and R. Burrell, B. Henderson is a fivetimes winner of the N.Z.L.G.U. Salver. I. Morrison and J. Miller won the Auckland Ladies Golf Association Trophy,
and Y. Taylorand V. Beeston won the Waimarino Trophy. Hazel Woolett and Pat Burns of the Waimarino Golf Club won Flight 2 of the NZ Ladies Golf Union Salver. The competition was open to golfers of 50 years of age and over, in pairs with a combined handicap of 52 or less. Sixty-two pairs took part, and three of the golfers were aged 74. There was only one withdrawal from the competition when a lady slipped in the shower and needed 14 stitches! The runner-up for.one of the trophies, managed to play good golf with both of her hips pinned. The competition finished with a great after match function at which Madge James played the piano and several ladies were seen to do a gentle knees-up! The Waimarino Ladies Golf Club Committee were very grateful to the sponsors and business houses of Ohakune and Raetihi and to motelliers and helpers, for all their support in mounting this national competition.
