Asthma meeting

A meeting of local people interested in asthma was held at Waimarino Hospital recently to discuss the formation of a Waimarino Asthma Society. Dr Powles, a Wanganui chest physician, told the meeting that forming a society was a good idea because it would help to disseminate knowledge of new treatments, help in the prevention of further attacks and provide support for sufferers and their parents. Another meeting is to be held in the nurses hostel at Waimarino Hospital at 8.00 pm on 27 November when the society will be set up. It is hoped to hold four or five meetings a year at which guest speakers such as doctors, physiotherapists and drug company representatives will discuss vital subjects for asthmatics, such as new treatments and how to use an inhaler correctly. Public health nurse Leigh Berry said one of the main reasons for forming the society was to give support to parents waking in the middle of the night with a wheezing child.
