Horse riding instruction begins
Both children and adults can learn horse riding from Julie Pearson who began instruction in Ohakune recently. Lessons, which will be for individuals and groups, will look at basic aspects of • horse management and caring for the horse, as well as safety. Instruction takes place on the farm of her neighbour, Neil Whale, where there are natural obstacles such as logs, ditches and streams, so that riders can learn to handle horses. Julie, who has lived most of her life in Raetihi, has been riding all her life. She has however travelled all over the country for riding instruction as there was no one in the area who taught riding. She has represented the area in horse events around the country and been involved in horse judging. She was the chief instructorand herhusband, Robin, the president, of the local pony club, which they restarted after if had been in recess. The couple have five horses, including two thoroughbred broodmares for racing and one for dressage. As well as their interest in horses, Julie and Robin have a commercial cleaning business, cleaning shops, Turoa Skifield's office, cafes and chalets, Robin drives a TD Haulage chip liner at night. During the school holidays, Julie plans to hold a cross-country riding course for three days, for children and adults.
