Epic round-the-mountains relay
A record 81 teams took part in the Round-the Mountain Relay on Saturday in brilliantly fine weather. The open grade was won by Army Training Group, the first time a military team has won the event, while Auckland Customs, winners for the past three years, were second. In the composite grade, which included mixed teams of men, women and veterans, Wellington Fire Brigade came first despite their delayed start 13 minutes after the rest. In the ladies grade, Bluebirds of Hamilton won for the third year in succession followed by Snowbunnies, a team from Waiouru Military Camp. Forest Service Veterans, always a strong team, won the veterans grade. The summery weather proved too much for several runners who succumbed to
heat stroke and dehydration on the mid-afternoon 9th leg and had to drop out. No one was seriously ill but previous runners, most !of whom were well-relaxed and watered by then, had to take over which caused great consternation! Among local teams T eachers Ohakune came 15th in the composite grade with a time of 12 hours, 44 minutes, 23 seconds, about 52 minutes after the winners, while Waimarino Squash Club
were placed 10th In the open grade with an unofficial time of 12 hours, one minute. The organisation of the event by Army Training Group was a major logistical task which was handled magnificently. ATG also put on the very successful function in the evening at which 1300 attended. The team entry fee of $77 covered costs of printing programmes, paying for the band and buffet food.
