Charles Mareikura in NZ karate team

Charles Mareikura of Ohakune was selected for the New Zealand team at the New Zealand Open Karate Championships held at Porirua at Labour Weekend. The competition was open to all irrespective of karate systems. Charles was selected in his weight division: under 77 kgs (12 stone), black belt,

men, on his success in the tournament and past performances. He was first in two ciasses and second in another. The team of 24, which includes eight under 18, eight women and eight men; is to take part in a twomatch competition against Australia in Deeember. The local karate group and the National Park club, including many children, travelled to Porirua for the competition. Corban Tumataroa reached the semi-final, and Desmond Chung the quarter final, in their grades.
