Hydatids officer has canine parasite
Waimarino County Council's Hydatids Officer and Building inspector, Harold Wise, told councillors at a recent meeting that he has a high reading of roundworm larvae contracted from infected dogs. The infection, toxocara canis larva, is becoming a job-related health risk for hydatids officers. The infection leads to two types of disease: visenal larva migrans, which causes fever, cough and flu-like sympto'ms, and ocular toxicariasis, which, when injested, enters the eye causing blindness, epilepsy and, rarely, death. There is no known cure for the disease. Mr Wise told councillors that his reading for the disease was 1 .3. A strongly positive reading was 1.5 and a negative reading less than 0.7. Chairman Bruce Berry expressed his concern for Mr Wise and it was decided to refer the matter to the Hydatids Committee for close monitoring.
