Wine club holds annual dinner
Eight wines were sampled, along with a six-course dinner, at the Waimarino Wine Club's annual dinner at the Hobbit on 19 October. Twenty-four people attended the evening, including Peter and Ray King from Auckland. Ray works for Allied Liquor Mferchants and her husband is a knowledgeable wine connoisseur. To accompany the hors d'oevres, a dry Spanish champagne in typical champagne style, Freixenet Brut, was chosen. Domecq la Ina, a very dry Spanish sherry, accompanied the pea and ham soup. Delegates Semillon Chardonnay 1984 was served with the seafood mornay. This is an interesting blend of two wines which is dry with a good fruit flavour. The main courses, either fillet steak with red wine sauce, or duck with orange sauce, were accompanied by Taltarni Shiraz 1980, a smooth, full-bodied Australian shiraz, and Chateau Beyehevelle Saint Julien 1978, one of the lesser Chateaus — but the most expensive wine of the night at over $40. DESSERT Two sweet dessert wines went well with the gateau or fresh fruit salad. These were Chateau de Rolland Barsac 1981 and Lauerburg Berncastler Doctor Riesling - Spatlese 1979, a German dessert wine which reflects the German style of winemaking. Warre's Nimrod Old Tawny Port was served with the cheese board, and Cognac with coffee to end the meal. Usual meetings of the Waimarino Wine Club, every alternate Sunday evening at members' homes, are not on such a lavish scale as the annual dinner.
