Ruapehu earthquake
A relatively large earthquake was recorded at the crater of Mt Ruapehu recently. The quake measured 5cms in width on the seismograph at park headquarters, Whakapapa Village, and was confined to the top of the mountain. Smaller earthquakes also occurred later.
Investigations earried out at the crater after the quakes revealed the only difference was the colour of the lake, which had turned a darker grey. Parker ranger, Paul Dale, said this was probably caused by chemicals and dirt circulating in the water. There has been no other activity since that time.
