OHAKUNE DISTRICT COURT

The following cases were heard by Judge E. W. Unwin in the Ohakune District Court on Thursday 24 October. Sergeant Neil Coker appeared for the police. ★ ★ ★ Shannon Winiata, 22, labourer of Raetihi, appeared for sentence on a charge of burglary from Robins Nest in Raetihi on 7 September. Harvey. ★ ★ ★ Avril Tewhiwia Katene, 33, road surfaceman of Ohakune, appeared on a charge of manslaughter committed on or about 10 May. He was remanded to 21 November so that a depositions hearing can be set. Counsel: P. Brown. ★ ★ ★ Darrell Shaun McLeod, 22, unemployed market gardener of Karioi, was remanded in custody to 21 November on a total of more than 70 assorted charges to which he had. pleaded guilty. On the false pretences charges a total of $9662 was involved for which $7147 compensation is being sought. Counsel: P. Brown. ★ ★ ★ Sonny Pikari, 22, labourer of Ohakune, appeared on a charge of offensive behaviour committed in Clyde Street, Ohakune, on 5 October. He pleaded guilty and was convicted and fined $350, court costs $35. ★ ★ ★

Martin Thomas Gray, 20, mill hand of Raetihi, appeared on a charge of possession of a Class C drug, cannabis leaf, on 6 October. He pleaded guilty and was convicted and fined $300, court costs $35. ★ ★ ★ Robert Daniel Edmonds, 18, shearer of Raetihi, appeared on a charge of unlawfully taking a motor vehicle, a 1 982 Ford Falcon utility valued at $18,750, on 3 October. He pleaded guilty and was remanded to 21 November for a reparation report and sentence. Bail was set at $500. Counsel: D. G. Harvey. ★ ★ ★ Ricky John McLeod, 18, mill hand of Ohakune, appeared on a charge of careless use of a motor vehicle on Burns Street, Ohakune, on 29 August. He pleaded guilty and was convicted and fined $100, court costs $35. He was disqualified from driving for 2 1 days. ★ ★ ★ Michael Paul Beckett, 36, woodworker of Rangataua, appeared on a charge of assaulting Johannus Geraldus Cornelius Schrier on 26 August. He was remanded at large to appear on 19 December for a defended hearing. Counsel: D. G. Harvey. ★ ★ ★ Shane Lee Garrett, 21, driver of Wanganui, appeared on a charge of careless use of a motor vehicle on Soldiers Road, Ohakune, 31 August. Defendant, who did not appear, pleaded guilty through his counsel D. G. Harvey and was remanded to 19 December for a defended hearing. ★ ★ ★ Douglas Wayne Hogan, 21, mechanic of Karioi, appeared on a charge of careless use of a motor vehi-

cle on Mangawhero Terrace on 28 September. He was convicted and disqualified for three months to take effect from 22 November to give defendant an opportunity to apply for a limited licence. Counsel: D. G. Harvey. * ★ * John Lleweliyn McLean, 18, labourer of Ohakune, appeared on a charge of intentional damage to a grass surface within the Tongariro National Park area on 18 July. He also appeared on a charge of using obscene language in a public place, Clyde Street, Ohakune, on 20 September. He pleaded not guilty to both charges. Following a defended hearing he was convicted and fined on both charges. On the wilful damage charge he was fined $150, court costs $35 and disqualified from driving for three months from 22 November. He was also ordered to make reparation of $96. On the obscene language charge he was fined $50, court costs $35. Counsel: D. G. Harvey. ★ ★ ★ David Noel Hudson, 21, farm labourer of Henderson, appeared on two MOT charges of excess breath alcohol at Wanganui and Feilding and using an unlicensed vehicle on 8 August at Wanganui. He pleaded guilty to the charges and was disqualified from driving for 1 8 months. He was also sentenced to 100 hours of community work. Counsel: P. Brown. ★ ★ ★ The case brought against Murray J. McLaughlan Ltd of Wellington, by Waimarino County Council, for carrying out drainage and plumbing work at Rangataua under a permit issued to another plumber thereby breaching plumbing regulations and the 1956 Health Act, was dismissed.
