Volunteers wanted for park
Due to financial cuts in programmes which pay for summer staff in Tongariro National Park, volunteers are to be used. People who want to become involved with the park can work at jobs such as track maintenance, or as hut wardens, said park ranger, Paul Dale.
However, each person will go through a selection process before being accepted to work for the park. "We're not accepting just anyone," said Mr Dale. Specialists, such as photographers and journalists, will be welcomed and already a volunteer is using a computer to work out the park's summer budget.
The scheme is common in recreation areas in America, and park rangers have spent time there studying how it works. "We are looking for people who are interested and have something to offer the park, and in return we'll satisfy their needs to do a job and cover their expenses," said Mr Dale.
