Waiheke children visit Ohakune

Visiting the Waimarino last week were 23 children from Waiheke Island School. The children, aged eight and nine, were billeted by Ellen Gould's class, Room 13 of Ohakune Primary School. . The group's teacher, Malcom Swanson, said the children wanted to visit an area which was completely different from where they lived. During their four-day visit they saw the Waiouru Military Museum, the Winstone Samsung Pulp Mill at Karioi, the Karioi Lakes and Wilson's carrot shed.

They enjoyed skiing and toboganing and played sports with Ohakune Primary School children. The Kohanga Reo children at the Maungarongo Pa entertained the group with Maori songs and the Waiheke children sang their songs in reply. Mrs Gould said it was wonderful that everyone had made time for the children and that the visit was of great benefit to the children and parents of both schools. Their trip ended on Friday with a debate between Ohakune School as to whether it is better to live by the sea or the mountain.
