Desert Road upgrading

Safer and more comfortable driving is the expected result of major improvements to the Desert Road between Turangi and the Summit rest area, according to the Ministry of Works and Development. Four gully sections, where the road winds and twists, are the biggest problem, and these will be straightened. Along with other landscap-

ing the cost in today's prices will be about $10 million. An environmental assessment report wil be available for public comment early next year, and approval from the National Roads Board will be needed. Work has already begun on the Makahikatoa Stream crossing, where environmental study was not required, and this should be mostly completed by Christmas. The rest of the project should take five or six years.
