Attractive surroundings and reasonable prices
that's the Stutz Cafe
Reflecting the 1920s car, the Stutz Bearcat, from where it gets it name, the Stutz Cafe in Clyde Street has a clean and uncluttered look. The predominant pinks, greys and burgundies of the decor, as well as the wall mirrors and ceiling fans, aiso have a 1920s feel, and this is complemented by plants in brass pots. The Stutz Cafe grew out of the Country Cafe after extensive expansion and refurbishment finished early this winter. According to owner Chris Thrupp the aim of the renovation was to provide customers with reasonably priced meals in attractive surroundings.
"That is why we use a cafe-style service where you order and pay at the counter, so we can keep staff and costs down," s^id Chris. Stutz Cafe succeeds admirably. Service from Diane is efficient and relaxed, the food is good and the. surroundings pleasant. I he menu is varied and changes frequently. With few exceptions the various courses are the same price starting with soup du jour at $ 1 .50. Entrees are all $3 and range from very tasty scallops on a bed of rice through to pate. Mains are $8.50 except for the steak dish, which is one dollar more. The Camembert Chicken with Apricot was interesting
and succulent, and the Orange Roughy Baked in Lemon Butter was juicy and tangy. Chris said they varied the menu frequently, but always included fish, pork, chicken, steak and vegetarian dishes, so there is something for everyone. The best of ingredients are selected: the steak is always a good fillet, as is the pork, and the fish is Orange Roughy or John Dory. For sweets there are ice cream and fresh fruit salad, combinations, a chocolate mocha layer cake and a scrumptious pavlova-like dish called Pavalena.
To round off the meal there is a choice of coffee or special Irish or liqueur coffee. Stutz Cafe is really two establishments in one. The BYO, which at the moment is open seven nights, is during week days a coffee shop serving lighter meals and snacks. Next door, on the site of the original Country Cafe, Country Takeaways opens seven days and nights. The pizzas are particularly popular. The two establishments are however run completely separately, with distinct cooking areas.
While the Cafe takes bookings staff usually try to keep a couple of tables free which may suit those who are not after a full meal. Although there is a minimum $3 charge at night, it is quite acceptable to come in foranentree and coffee, ora sweet and coffee. In the summer Stutz will be serving a cheese board, which may suite those going to the pictures. Ifyou are looking for a reasonably priced meal in interesting surroundings Stutz Cafe is the place for you.
