Ruapehu Radio switches off
After final live broadcasts from the Martini Giant-Man Triathalon and the Waimarino Rescue Day events on Saturday, Ruapehu Radio finished their broadcast at 5pm. The station has been broadcasting for three months, providing music, community information, snow reports and job lines. "The big highlight of course was the radiothon, which was such a good weekend — we never thought we'd get the $40,000 — we thought if we could leave the Waimarino having raised - $30,000 we'd have ddne our bit for the community," said
station manager, Dave Campbell. Dave said there will definitely be Ruapehu Radio next year, but he is uncertain what form it will take. Radio New Zealand's 2ZW station in. Wanganui has an application before the Broadcasting Tribunal to build an FM repeater in Raetihi. If this is approved, 2ZW will be heard clearly in the Waimarino all year. Ruapehu Radio may be permitted to take over the repeater for the winter. Discussion between Radio New Zealand and Ruapehu Radio will have to be carried out before a decision is made, Dave said.
