Tragedy touches local gymnasts
The tragic deaths of members of the Grayson and Mosey families, when their plane struck wires across Tory Channel, cast a pall on the recent Junior National Gymnastics Championships in Wellington, according to Glyn Hubbard, coach of the Turoa Tumblers. "Gymnastics is a family thing in New Zealand and you get to know other competitors families really well, so everyone was shocked by the accident." he said.
Glyn's family knew the Moseys very well. Cindy Mosey, the only survivor of the crash, is in the same grade as Carys Hubbard, and Helen Hubbard had stayed on the Mosey's boat during a recent training week. The NZ Gymnastics Association is setting up a trust fund for Cindy Mosey, and a memorial trophy for Kirsty Grayson will become a regular part of the Junior National Championships from next year. Last week the Turoa Tumblers discussed what they could do to help Cindy Mosey. The club will probably attempt to raise money for the trust fund. Club members will also do their best to help Patrick Cooper, a former member of the team, in his endeavour to compete at the World Championships for Disabled Skiers in Sweden in 1986. At their open morning planned for November the club will probably direct any donations received to Patrick.
