Changes to Ohakune Post Office for improved security

The hole appearing outside the Ohakune Post Office is the first stage of alterations designed to improve itySupervisor of the property section at Wanganui's chief post office, Mr Noel Tennent, said that the head office of the post office had introduced a policy to modernise older buildings round the country in the light of recent robberies. "The building is being opened out a bit and more glass put in so that people can see in from the street, whereas it is hidden at the moment," he said. There will be a change round inside too, so that staff working out the back will be also able to see what is happening at the counters. The changes mean more work than one might expect because when one thing is changed others have to follow on. The Post Office is using a private architect for the job, and he has called for tenders. The work is being done by Wells and Wadsworth Construction of Wanganui, and is expected to take about lOweeks. The Post Office may still look at a new building for Ohakune, perhaps in five or six years time.
