Cuts upset council
Cutbacks in the Summer Programme for the Tongariro National Park were described as "robbing the people of New Zealand" and "a reprehensible move,"by members of the Ohakune Borough Council at their meeting on 19 September.
"I felt the programmes offered by the Tongariro National Park were of significant benefit not only to locals, but also to thousands of tourists who visit the region during summer," Mayor Bill Taylor told the meeting. Cr Margaret Horne said she was "dumbfounded" to hear of the cuts. "If their projects had not been well attended I may have understood it, but they've increased, one hun-dred-fold over the last few years," she said. Mayor Taylor said he would be making strong representations to the Minister of Lands, the Department of Lands and Survey and the Minister of Tourism to let them know of the effect it will have on the area. ★ ★ ★ Mayor Taylor proposed a vote of thanks to councillors Ellen Gould and Margaret Horne for their efforts in organising the Turoa Art Awards. "It is a tribute to their dilligence as well as to the work of Bea Barnes and her daughter who organised the show in the past," he said.
