Bauer to race?
Raetihi's long distance runner, Ziggy Bauer will be competing in the Double Brown ultrathon to be held in November, if he is reinstated with his amateur status. The status was taken away from him two years ago due to "nastyness," says Bauer. He is bitter that the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association withdrew his status but will reapply due to pressure from friends and fellow runners. 'Tm the only amateur in New Zealand, all the others are highly paid and supported by the Sports Foundation and the Amateur Athletic Association but I've never got anything out of this sport," he said. He says he was kicked out because of a "pure technecality" and refers to it as "pure hypocrisy." However, Ziggy says he has had verbal agreement
from the association that there will be no difficulty in having his amateur status reinstated. If he is granted the status, he will compete against eleven other New Zealanders who have entered the race and possibly several internationals, including Yiannis Kuouros, from Greece, the winner of the Sydney-Melbourne race held earlier this year. The race will be held in six stages from Wellington to Auckland from 17 to 22 November. The stages will comprise: Wellington to Palmerston North, Palmerston North to Taihape, Taihape to Turangi passing through Waiouru, Turangi to Rotorua, Rotorua to Huntly and Huntly to Auckland. Prize-money will total $15,000 with $8500 for first prize, second $3500 and third $2000 then ranging to $100 for tenth place.
