Rugby League comes to Waiouru
The Waiouru Rugby League Club was started in August of this year and since then have played four games. A further two games are planned between now and Labour Weekend. The results so far are: vs Ohakea Airforce Base lost 30-26, vs Te Rapa Airforce Base lost 32-10, vs RNZAF Base Auckland won 54-24, vs Trentham Military Camp won 38-16. 'Pompey' Manahi and 'Tammy' Tamati (cousin of the Tamati brothers who play rugby league for the New Zealand Kiwis) were awarded players of the match but all team members played extremely well.
The game next Saturday will be against a team from Whakatane startingat 1pm. The following week (5 October) the match will be against Ohakea... a return match for the Chalienge T rophy. The Waiouru team are young and inexperienced but are improving with every game. A feature of their play has been the ability to move the ball in tight situations. Finally the club intends to join the Manawatu Rugby League Sub-Union for the 1986 season in the "senior 1 st" grade.
