Body found in bush near Main Trunk line

Human remains were discovered by contract workers planting explosives near a large boulder overhanging the North Island Main Trunk line near the Hapuawhenua Viaduct two kilometres north of Ohakune on Sunday. Police Sergeant Neil Coker of Ohakune says "it is anyone's guess how old the remains are. It was taken to Wanganui on Monday to be examined by a pathologist." The Taihape CIB are carrying out inquiries into the death which has been labelled as "suspicious" as it is believed that the human skull showed possible signs of a bullet wound. It is also believed the remains were partially buried when found. Railway workers were preparing to blast the boulder as it presented a threat to the railway track below when the remains were discovered.
