CHILDREN'S CORNER

SKI SCHOOL On Tuesday 6 August National Park's Standard 4, Forin 1 and Form 2 had their first school skiing day for 1985. This year we have a lot of beginners so we raffled a pair of Fischer skis, Marker bindings and poles to the value of $415. Each ticket cost $5. The raffle was drawn on the 28 August. It was won by S. Gibbon of Taumarunui. The proceeds have gone to lessons for our beginners, taken by Chateau Ski School. The parents, children and teachers have put a lot of hard work and effort to get the programme on its way. We had to write to Ruapehu Transport Limited, Ruapehu Alpine Limited, Top O' the Bruce and the Wanganui Education Board to get permission to go. We'dlike to thankR.T.L., R.A.L. and T.O.B. for all their help towards the programme. Our first day up was a bit hectic but Lthink by next term it won't be so bad. The first day up someone.from an advanced group takes a person who has never been up before and takes them through ski hire and up onto the chairlift. This is called our 'buddy' system. We have groups consisting of 4-5 children. Here is what some children think about the programme. "It was my first day up and I thought it was cool. I'm really looking forward to next week!"(Joann Wallace) "The programme was very well organised and I think it's good that we can have school skiing and I'd also like to thank R.A.L., R.T.L. and T.O.B. for all their help." (Rebecca Lee) "The skiing was great and I thoroughly enjoyed myself." (Michael Buckland) If there are other schools in the Waimarino area that have had school skiing please write and let me know how your school's skiing programme runs. My address: Rachel Newton, Room 1, PO Box 4, National Park. And thanks again to all those who helped
