Membership reaches "hundreds"

"I am most impressed with the response so far . . . membership has already reached several hundred," said chairman of the Waimarino Rescue Trust fund-raising steering committee Terry Tapp last week. Since the helicopter visited seven schools in the area applications for C.R.E.W. (Chopper Rescue Emergency Worker) membership have been pouring into the Bulletin, Ruapehu Radio and Boyds Bookshop in Raetihi. "All the schools have agreed to work on fundraising projects. . .they all thought it was a good idea and that there was a real need for an emergency rescue-equipped helicopter in the area," said Terry Tapp. The committee is trying to raise $40,000 for the rescue and resuscitation equipment as well as for the structural alterations to the helicopter to enable it to carry two stretches internally. Ruapehu Lions will be responsible for all monies raised. Both the investment

in the equipment and the structural alterations are financially safeguarded for the Waimarino Rescue Trust by John Harding whose machine is leased from Rangitikei Air Services to Wanganui Aero Work and flown by local pilot Lisa Patterson. Fund-raising activities this

coming weekend include the setting up of voluntary donation toll-gates on the Ohakune Mountain Road and the Bruce Road at Whakapapa but the main event will be a 24-hour Radiothon from 4pm Saturday morning until 4pm Sunday. . .listento Ruapehu Radio 2XR for further de-

tails. Young people who wish to support the project can become C.R.E.W. members by filling in the coupon below and posting it or delivering it with their donation. Each donor will receive a C.R.E.W. jacket patch, a wall certificate and a free ride with Lisa Patterson.
