NIMT blocked by blast

The incident occurred when staff from Hurlstone Earthmoving Ltd — contracted by NZ Railways for the Ohakune-Horopito deviation associated with the electrification of the NIMT — attempted to move an estimated 60-tonne slab of rock by using high explosives. The blast brought down part of the hillside above the line and caused the track to be pushed out of alignment by af out a metre over about 60 metres of its length. The line was cleared before midnight by workers from NZ Railways and Hurlstones. Two freight trains were held up but the Northerner was able to get through.
