Wanganui's 2ZW applies for FM Radio licence in Waimarino

Radio 2ZW in Wanganui will soon be heard clearly in the Waimarino on FM if an application from Radio New Zealand to the Broadcasting Tribunal succeeds. A VHF mono transmitter will be erected at Mt. Hukaroa, near Raetihi, if the application is approved, to relay 2ZW's programme. This will greatly improve coverage to Ohakune, Raetihi and National Park, and will give direct coverage to Waiouru, said 2ZW's manager, Godfrey Gray. During the winter months, 2ZW will stop to allow Ruapehu Radio to cover the

area as it does now, in association with Radio New Zealand. The application is the first by Radio New Zealand for an FM mono system. The FM transmitter will cut costs compared with AM but people without FM radios will have to buy one to hear the station clearly, Mr Gray said. The Broadcasting Corporation has approved Radio New Zealand's application and Mr Gray hopes the Broadcasting Tribunal will decide shortly. If it is approved without a hearing, Mr Gray said the relayed programme should begin next year.
