Third Vegymski attracts over 100

One hundred of New Zealand's top gymnasts will be coming to Ohakune this weekend for Vegymski. The event has been organised by Glyn Hubbard, coach of the Turoa Tumblers, as a fun weekend for gymnasts. It has become an annual event — this will be the third time it has been held in Ohakune. Glyn started the weekends to promote Ohakune's products — vegetables, skiing and gymnastics. On Saturday, open mixed teams will compete at the Ruapehu College gymnasium. On Saturday night there will be a social and dinner, with a talk on gymnastics and skiing, then on Sunday it is planned that everyone will go skiing. Teams will be chosen out of a hat, with two males and two females in each, so there will be no club teams. Junior gymnasts will compete on Saturday morning, females from 1pm and males from 4pm to 6pm.

There will be a special competition for about 20 veterans — gymnasts who have retired from competitions or who don't compete regularly, many of whom are coaches. All participants will receive a bag of carrots donated by Alan Foster, and first, second and third placed teams will each receive ski badges. There will also be gym stickers and raffles. "There's a remarkable field of talented gymnasts coming," said Glyn. "It's good for the local kids to see top level gymnasts and what they can do." The current national champion and two past champions will be attending, as well as 17 past or present New Zealand representatives, including nine medallists from recent national championships. Seven finalists from the television Junior Gymnast of the Year will also be attending the Vegymski. For the senior gymnasts the weekend will be a chance to relax and unwind from the pressures of the recent national championships. As the junior nationals are being held two weeks after the Vegymski, it will be a dress rehearsal for them, said Glyn.

The Vegymski is a nonprofit venture and entry to see the gymnasts on Saturday will be free.
