PUBLIC MEETING TO DISCUSS POOL COVER
A public meeting will be held on 24 September to gauge public opinion on the proposal to cover in the Raetihi Pool. The pool enclosure committee, chaired by Lance Langdon, has done a feasibility study on the proposal and they now need to find out the amount of support they will receive from the community. If public opinion is favourable, a fundraising campaign will be launched to raise the $ 1 20,000 needed if the pool enclosure is to be started by this time next year, says Mr Langdon. After that date, the cost would become too high with inflation. "If the Raetihi pool is covered, it will turn what is now a two-month facility into probably a ten-month facility," Mr Langdon said.
The covered pool would be heated by the existing solar panels. More heating may be looked into later, "but the important thing is to get the construction up," he said. At the meeting to answer questions about building work will be Brian Hart, structural engineer of B and H. Construction from Hamilton, and Albert Trutsch, a technicafadvisor for Fletcher Brown Built. A circular is being distributed this week in Raetihi and Ohakune, asking people if they are for or against the covering of the pool and if they would be prepared to support fundraising. Mr Langdon says if people cannot attend the meeting but would like their opinion known, they should contact one of the committee members.
