Whakapapa skifield under study

A survey of the economic implications of the use of Whakapapa Skifield is being done by Dr Anton Meister of Massey University for the Department of Lands and Survey. The main objectives of the survey are to determine the amount of money spent by visitors to the skifield during the 1985 ski season and to find out the value of the skifield to its users. The survey will also provide a description of visitors to update a survey held in 1977. Chief ranger at park headquarters, Whakapapa Village, Bruce Jefferies, says the survey information will be essential for long-term planning. He says the depariment is often criticised for a lack of planning put into recreational activities, so the survey is an attempt to change that. Questionnaires are being randomly distributed to visitors on selected days throughout the ski season. Visitors are asked to list the main purpose of their visit, the amount they spend during their stay, their level of satisfaction with facilities such as the Bruce Road, ski lifts and cafeterias, the most useful information services, and comments on the use of the Whakapapa skifield. As an incentive to complete the questionnaire all completed entries will be entered in a draw for $200 cash.
