Fickle weather rules racing programme

Winners and placegetters in the 1985 Subaru national ski championships will be announced at a prize-giving function tonight — if all goes well. With the notoriously changeable alpine weather in mind, the organisers, the Turoa Alpine Ski Club Inc, have set aside Wednesday and Thursday as back-up racing days. If one or both of those days have to be used, then

the prize-giving will be held at the end of the final day 's racing. Whichever days the events are held, they run to a tight schedule, with competitors getting their final race briefing at 8.45am, just over two hours before the first run of the day at 1 1am. The second run is timed for 1.30pm. The times are the same for both the giant slalom on the first day and the slalom on

the second race day. With over 80 skiers entered in the Nationals, race chief Don Allomes, chief of course Gilles Daigle and chief of start Colin Gemmell have to call on all their experience to keep the programme to time. The full race committee were fortunate a week earlier to be able to hone their organisational skills on the Homestyle-Rossignol races, which attracted big entries and went off smoothly.
