VANDALISM PENALISES CAMPERS

Concern has been raised at the increasing amount of vandalism around the Mangawhero Lodge area a short way up the Ohakune Mountain Road. Head ranger at the Ohakune Ranger Station, Lisle Irwin, says damage has been caused by motorists driving their vehicles on the grass area and taps for the water supply at the camping area have been pulled out. Mr Irwin says a few inconsiderate people are spoiling the area for everyone else. At present they are not considering closing the area as closure would affect legitimate campers a'nd picnickers. But he says they are thinking of ways of preventing the vandalism there. A complaint has been laid with the police who will be looking into the situation.
