THE BARGAIN (No. 2) Second Hand Ski Equipment — To Buy or not to Buy . . .that is the question (or is it?) You may recall reading our little dissertation last year . on the perils of buying second hand ski equipment. Well, the great university ski saies and the great snow show ski saies are over and done with and once again we are starting to hear the sad little tales from folk who have bought their equipment. One of our staff members was in the big city a few weeks ago and having dinner with friends. 17-year-old daughter produces her GREAT second hand skis which she had just purchased at one of the GREAT second hand ski saies. Well known brand of skis and. bindings for only $290 — no poles included and she would just have to get the bindings moved and the skis waxed and the edges done and should would have a complete set of skis and bindings and poles for about $340! A great buy! Or was it? Staff member gulped and hurriedly changed the subject. Friends probably thought she did not want to talk 'shop'. Truth of the matter was that daughter had purchased second hand a set of skis and bindings identical to those sold at ROY TURNERS SKI SHOP, brand new, with poles, bindings mounted, hot waxed and edges tuned for only $298!!! But that's not all — daughter is really quite a good skier and has purchased a set of skis which are not quite suitable for her level of ability and she cannot now expect to improve her style of skiing. Oh well, guess we can't win them all! Our story number two, which we were going to save for another advertrsement but we may as well tell you now that we have your attention, involves a young man who walked into the shop with a pair of super dooperdownhill racing skis 210cm long and asked us to buy them off him. We indicated that we already had sufficient number of 210cm skis and then our curiousity got the better of us and we asked him why he was selling them. We discovered that he was a very much beginner recreational skier and he had been told by his friends that he should be on l-o-n-g skis — he surely was! These super dooper skis were in the second hand department of a city ski shop and because they looked good he decided they were for him. Poor young man then wondered why he used to hurtle down the slopes at 90 miles an hour, totally out of control! We suggested that he take himself back to the place of his GREAT BUY, get rid of his l-o-n-g skis and come back and see us for some R-E-A-L S-E-R-V-J-C-E! So here we have two people who haven't done too well out of the second hand market — one on skis quite unsuitable for her skiing ability and she paid too much for what she got, the other with skis which make him a total disaster on the slopes — we hope he doesn't run into you whilst waiting in the tow queues! The second hand department is not always the best place to be and we suggest you see us first at: ROY TURNER A NEW ZEALAND | I ski shop sfxsy Buddo St, National Park Ph 757 — P.S. We really do have a number of 210cm racing skis — watch out fo.r our advertisement next week when we are offering some of these at a very very SPECIAL price. (Sorry, our 223cm pair were sold recently to a racer who was off to try the amateur downhill racing scene in America).
