Ruapehu Lions build Ohakune play-house
Ruapehu Lions were able to take their pnblic playground projects in Ohakune and Raetihi another step forward last weekend when the elevated play house in Jubilee Park, Ohakune had its floor and roof installed. They had been held up during previous weekends because of high winds . . . as voluntary part-time amateur 'builders' they didn't want to handle large sheets of tanalysed ply flooring and roofing iron in those blustery conditions. And because of other commitments — such as larabing at this time of year — most of the Lions building team were only able to come together at weekends. Ruapehu Lions vice-presi-dent Noel Bates said that both the Ohakune and Raetihi projects — the latter involving the building of swings and slides in the small community park in Seddon Street — were paid for from funds donated by Waiouru 's Desert Fair committee. Ohakune and Raetihi each received $750. Part of that donation combined with materials donated by MSD Speirs and the voluntary work of Lions enabled these two projects to proceed. The Ohakune play house will have a deck and railing extending out from the front of the main structure. A hole in the deck will accommodate a fireman's pole down which children can slide into a sand-pit below. Noel Bates said the main structure had been built in such a way that other additions — such as a slide — could be attached at a later date.
