RUGBY CHAMPIONS
Ohakune-Karioi deservedly won the Wanganui first division championship on Saturday by beating Utiku 15-4 at Taihape. Their faithful supporters, shell-shocked from the previous week's loss to W.H.S.O.B. turned out in force to see their team play but were understandably quiet until victory was assured. And what a victory it was ! No less than six regular first team players were out either because of representative duty or injury. Coach and former Wanganui representative, Robbie Manson, took the field for the first time this season along with Graeme Pike, an integral member of last year's team but unable to play this year due to business commitments. On the sideline, all out of retirement for the day, Robin Pearson whose boots had not been cleaned since they were last worn about three years ago, and Jeff and Murray Donald. Under the circumstances, it was a most meritorious win, all players knowing that a draw or a loss meant second place in the competition. At half-time, Ohakune led 7-0 through a Gerard Hipango penalty and a try from speedy winger, John Kennedy. Robbie Manson showed his determination and experience midway through second half when he capped a fine performance with a try. Utiku were rewarded five minutes from time with a try themselves only to concede one from the restart to a 'fired-up' Whetu Mareikura. At the final whistle, the players were warmly congratulated by a generous Taihape crowd who recognised that they had seen a real team performance. Bulletin 'Man of the Match' award to captain and inspiration of the day, Graeme Pike although 14 other players coliectively came close to also receiving the honour.
