National Park School celebrates 60th anniversary
The children of National Park School celebrated the school's 60th anniversary last week with a festival of performing arts. All 114 children at the school took part in the performance which was organised by Lorna Kramer, the new deputy principal at the school. The evening began with a Powhiri (welcome) by the, junior syndicate then Jarred Ward and Scott Mazey made welcoming speeches in Maori and English. Mr Ray Wade replied to the speeches in Maori. Jazzercise, gymnastics, folk dancing and Waiata Maori (Maori songs) were then performed by junior syndicate groups. Ballet items were performed by Kelda Macrae, Eleanor Davidson and Kelly Piper. An item, 'The Deck of Cards' was performed by Chris Henderson and Rainier Rahurihi and Kari Buckland and Melanie Seator performed a mime. The Whanake Rangataua karate group demonstrated their art of fighting and the
senior syndicate demonstrated their gymnastic skills. A modern dance was performed by Rachael Newton and Rebecca Lee and to finish, the senior syndicate sang Maori action songs. The oldest past pupils presently living in National Park, Mr Dave Mazey and
the youngest pupil at the evening, Hohepa Galloway cut the school's birthday cake together. The Community Hall, where the performance was held, was decorated with the children's art work for the term. There was a large display of spiders which the
pupils had made in conjunction with their science project. Wood carvings were on display which the children had learnt to make from the Wanganui Education Board Art Advisor, Rei Hendry when he visited the school several weeks ago.
