A major fire which occurred in a house in Carter Terrace, Ohakune on Friday night is being treated as suspicious. The alarm was raised at 9.29pm and two appliances attended the blaze. Extensive damage was caused to the kitchen and dining room areas but the blaze was brought under control in five minutes. However firemen stayed at the scene for two hours after it had been brought under control, deputy chief fire officer, Benny Goddard said. The fire officers used breathing apparatus and four hose reels to control the fire. The house, a single storey wooden building, is owned by Carter Holt, of Wellington. It had been unoccupied for two weeks. ★ ★ ★ Four people were injured when a Subaru vehicle travelling north along State Highway 4 was struck by a Mazda entering State Highway Four from Carroll Street, National Park on Saturday night. Two people from each vehicle were taken to Taumarunui Hospital. ★ ★ ★ Three pairs of skis were stolen from roof racks of cars parked around the centre of Ohakune over the weekend. * * * A 57-year-old tramper on Mt Ruapehu was rescued by a helicopter on Saturday. The man fell while crossing river stones. He injured and possibly fractured his knee on Friday. He and his acquaintances stayed in Blyth Hut overnight but, as the injured man could not walk, his friends tramped out and summoned help.
